Grr, it's taken me longer than normal to tell you about the Jenni Kayne show because every time I write her name, I have to look at it twice to make sure I'm not reviewing Jenni Kanye: the fashion designer who also raps with Daft Punk.
Jenni KaYNe continued her reputation in Olsen-appropriate separates with a collection almost exclusively in black, white and grey. There was one electric-blue dress for you wild children, but hey.
If I could somehow fuse the DNA of Unkle Karl (the Fendi version) with Iekeliene Stange and Katharine Hepburn, then I think I'd have the perfect customer for this season. You'll see what I mean.
The oversized blazer topping a slate-coloured minidress is just enough to hot up the nerd glasses. (Although dear Iekeliene might say bulky specs are appropriate for any occasion.) Layering the dress over a shirt keeps things chic when legs are semi-exposed.
One of my favourite looks from the collection. Metallic-black wrap skirt, cowl-front blouse and another blazer. The sheen in the skirt keeps things from going 80s.
Layered lace and an empire waist should look very Renaissance Festival, but the geometric look of the lace feels modern. I'd love to see this with a couple of bangles.
Aaaand Karl Lagerfeld for the win. It's safe to say this feathery harlequin-print top is best left to the slim, but it feels luxe here. Keeping the hem above the knee makes sure the volume on top doesn't weigh down the silhouette.
Didn't I tell you it was very Katharine? This is yet another look for the tall and slim (or at least tall and well proportioned), but there's one thing about this that makes 20-something Kayne stand out in the field: She doesn't equate skimpy with pretty.
And that, friends, is why this LA-born designer will stay in the closets of many.
